Spiced Holiday Cutouts


This is the last day of #ChristmasCookies Week and I'm sharing one last find from my Gram's recipe box.  I always hesitate when it comes to rolled out cookies, but the combination of the spices in these just seemed so perfect for the holidays I decided to give them a try. I highly recommend grating the spices fresh if you can.  I have a handheld twist grater that's awesome for this.

While the dough was in the fridge chilling I searched through all of my fun cookie cutters. At the bottom of the box was the nested set of stars. When my son was small we used them to make 3D Christmas Trees. 

I cut out 2 each of the 6 sizes.  Then I chose took the second smallest and used it for the remainder of the dough. They don't spread, but be sure not to crowd the sheets or they won't bake evenly.  Once they cooled I used my favorite Powdered Sugar Glaze on all but 10 of the smaller stars. You can tint it green if you like, but I wanted it to look like snow so I didn't.

I got two wonderful sprinkle mixes from Sweets and Treats, Lumber Jack and Mean One.  Either would have worked with the tree theme, but in the end I had to go with Mean One, which is inspired by one of my all time favorite holiday movies. 

For the tree stars, I piped icing just around the edges and then added on the sprinkles.  After it was set, I stacked them from largest to smallest, and added the smaller stars in between the larger ones to give it more height. I tipped the last one up and piped some icing behind it to keep it in place.

Spiced Holiday Cutouts

  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons raw sugar  OR Decorator icing, sprinkles, etc


  1. Beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add eggs, mixing well.  Add in flour and spices until combined.  Dough will be soft.  Wrap well and refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours.
  2. Heat oven to 350º.  Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3. Split dough in half. Roll out to about 1/4" thick on a lightly floured surface.  Cut into shapes as desired. You can gather the scraps and reroll them gently. Repeat with remaining dough.
  4. Place cookies onto prepared sheets.  Sprinkle the tops with raw  sugar or leave plain if you plan on icing them.
  5. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on sheets 1 to 2 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool completely. 
  6. If desired, frost cookies and decorate with sprinkles, candies, etc.  Store in an airtight container.

These look amazing! I love holiday cutouts but mine are usually just sugar cookies. Love this spiced twist.
Turned out perfectly. The Angel Face and I made these last year without all the gorgeous sprinkles though. Love it.
My kids would adore making these - and that tree is such a great holiday centerpiece. I love it!

I hesitate with rolled cookies too. We've all had them spread at some time! But these are totally cute and worth it!

Copycat Dunkin Donuts Egg White & Veggie Omelet Bites

I'm a huge fan of the Dunkin Donuts Power Breakfast sandwich, so when I started seeing ads for the new Egg White & Veggie Omelet Bites I stopped in and gave them a try.  They were delicious, but of course, I knew I could make them at home.  I started with the whites of six eggs. You can use pasturized whites if you don't want to do the whole separating, finding a use for the yolks thing.  I beat them up with some salt and pepper. Next up, the tomato and spinach.  I used grape tomatoes, seeded them and then chopped them into 1/4" pieces. I like baby spinach, and I took about 10 leaves and chopped those up into 1/4" pieces as well. I added that to the egg mixture.  When you pour it into the pans, be sure that it all gets evenly distributed.   They bake up pretty quickly, around 9 minutes or so.  Dunkin gives you two egg bites, the mini donut serving size is three. Copycat Dunkin Donuts Bacon and Cheddar Omelet Bites

Since I already came up with a version of Dunkin Donuts new Egg White & Veggie Omelet Bites for myself, I decided to make the other variety that they are offering, Bacon & Cheddar, for my husband. Super simple.  Beat up some eggs with salt and pepper.  Add in some shredded cheddar and a slice of bacon cut into 1/4" pieces (I used kitchen shears).  Bake them for about 9 minutes in sprayed mini donut pans. They baked up light and fluffy.  The bacon stayed crisp and there's just the perfect amount of cheese.   I split them up into portions in zip top bags and that way we can just grab a bag and warm them up. My husband laughed when I told him 3 is the serving size.  I'll definitely be doubling the recipe next time! Strawberry Pizzelles

Pizzelles are one of my favorite childhood cookies and I'm constantly looking for ways to put a new spin on them.  Since one of my favorite summer fruits is strawberries, I swapped out the vanilla in the original recipe with strawberry extract.  This post is sponsored in conjunction with #SummerDessertWeek !  I received product samples from sponsor companies to aid in the creation of my recipes.
